Celebration held for Saddletree Estates
On Friday, May 30, 2008, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and the Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA) celebrated a historic day in the exchange of Saddletree Estates. Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins, describe the day as a new day, signaling a new era of cooperation between the two agencies.
“I stand here today, accepting this gift from LRDA, and publicly thank them,” said Tribal Chairman Goins. “This shows the new spirit of cooperation from the board of directors of LRDA and the Tribe.”
LRDA built Saddletree Estates with funds the Tribe receives yearly from HUD through the NAHASDA program. LRDA had the right to maintain this property, even after NAHASDA funds were transferred to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. Currently at the site are 7 apartment complexes, and a total of 21 rental units.
The Lumbee Tribe also on Friday, celebrated not only the exchange, but also held a groundbreaking to celebrate the expansion of Saddletree Estates into an elder community with 3 additional units and a community center complex built on site. The Tribe currently administers another elder site called Heritage Haven in Fairmont.
