Groundbreaking held for Community Center

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will host a groundbreaking for a Lumbee Boys & Girls Club and a community center in Tribal District 2(Representatives Sharon Hunt and Louise Mitchell) on Friday, December 5 at 11:30 am. The event will be held on site, at the intersection of Hilly Branch and Back Swamp roads.  Tribal District 2 consists of the communities of Back Swamp, Fairmont and Smyrna.  The general public is invited and encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided.

The community center will allow tribal members a place to met, fellowship and have social events, as well as an outreach site for tribal services.  It will also host a Lumbee Boys & Girls Club which fosters character and a positive place for kids.

“I am very excited about presenting this opportunity to this community,” said Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins. The community center will also function as an elder’s site for Tribal District 2 elders to meet weekly and participate in the Elders Program of the Lumbee Tribe.

“It is my hope that the community will utilize this center as a way to bring our communities closer, and uplift one another,” said Tammy Maynor, interim Tribal Administrator.

Funding for this activity was made available to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina by the Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Office of Native American Programs
