Lumbee Tribe participates in 2nd Annual Methodist Heritage Day

(August 2010) The Rockingham District Native American Cooperative Ministry hosted its 2nd Annual Heritage Day Honoring Service Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Camp Grace in Fairmont, North Carolina.
“It is an honor and privilege to be here with you today,” commented Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett, “the Tribe stands ready to assist you and your community in any way possible.” According to Reverend Sylvia Collins-Ball, a minister within the conference, the Rockingham District Native American Cooperative Ministries was formed in 1995 so that the Indian Methodist Church community could be mobilized and become collective in sharing Christ and meeting the needs within communities. “I want to thank one of our Tribal council members for helping in coordinating this wonderful event, Ms. Louise Mitchell,” continued Tribal Chairman Swett.
The Lumbee Warriors posted the colors and Southern Sun sang an honor song to begin the event. Reverend Sylvia Collins-Ball then delivered her message from Deuteronomy chapter four. “I’m proud and humbled by God’s people and their display of commitment today in making this day possible, I thank you,” said Reverend Collins-Ball.
After the message was delivered a special tribute was given to Reverend Dr. Robert L. Mangum and Mrs. Della O. Locklear for their years of service to their faith ministries. “I thank all of those who have given me the opportunity to walk in the track God gave me,” said Reverend Dr. Mangum. “I thank God for these years and all he has bless me with, I wouldn’t trade it for a share in the railroad!” said Locklear enthusiastically. Other lay people within the numerous Methodist churches were honored as well for their contributions. “Thank you all for all that you do and will continue to do collectively and individually on behalf of your faith ministries,” Tribal Chairman Swett said.
