(June 2010) The TRU (Truth Reality Unfiltered) adult leaders and TRU youth advocates with the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Project traveled to Carowinds to educate the public outside of tribal territory on Friday, June 11, 2010.
Throughout the year the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Project host events and activities to promote its purpose of enhancing and increasing awareness of the health risks and diseases related to tobacco use through the Health and Wellness Trust Fund initiatives.. TRU youth advocates train to initiate policy change, create tobacco free events, and re-introduce the traditional and medicinal uses of tobacco. Friday gave the TRU youth advocates the chance to put their training to use by handing out educational brochures and pamphlets to the public visiting the Charlotte area at Carowinds.
“I am so proud of the TRU adult leaders and youth advocates,” stated Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Project Manager April Bryant, “this was also a reward for all of their hard work throughout the year because they major contributors of why this project is successful in its mission.”
In conjunction with educating about the Tobacco Prevention Cessation Project they were also handing out material in regard to QuitelineNC. This is also funded through the Health and Wellness Trust Fund as well as the NC Department of Health and Human Services. It is an avenue which tobacco users wishing to quite are able to utilize by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). QuitelineNC is a free service where an individual is assigned a coach that will assign a program that will help them quite using tobacco.
The Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Project areas of advocacy include advocating for tobacco-free policies, convincing restaurants to go smoke-free, attending tobacco free American Indian conferences, planning creative youth activities, creating tobacco media messages and much more. The program encourages youth of all ages to get involved.
