Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina hires new Tribal Administrator
(May 2010) Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina confirmed the hiring of the Tribal Administrator, appointed by the Tribal Chairman, on Thursday, May 6, 2010 during the confirmation meeting for a Tribal Administrator in the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Tribal Housing Complex. “Some people may ask me why I chose her and I tell them it’s because I trust her, I trained her and I believe she can get the job done right,” commented Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett(pictured below with New TA Dr. Rose Marie Lowry-Townsend).
The process for finding a new Tribal Administrator began in early February after the closing date for the position. For the past three years Tammy Maynor has been serving as the Interim Tribal Administrator and Director of Governmental Affairs. She will now assume her original duties as Director of Governmental Affairs. “I think we are going in the right direction,” stated Maynor, “I think Dr. Rose Marie will be a wonderful, wonderful asset to this organization.”
Early Friday morning on May 7, 2010 Chairman Swett called a mandatory staff meeting in the conference room for all the employees to become aware of the new addition in administration. “I think it’s time you met your new Tribal Administrator,” began Chairman Swett as he introduced Dr. Rose Marie Lowry-Townsend.
“I’m here to make your job easier, by creating a path for you to make sure you have the skills, materials and knowledge to do the job that you do,” declared Tribal Administrator Lowry-Townsend as she greeted the tribal employees, “our number one investment should be in you because we are providing services for our people and that happens through you.” Dr. Lowry-Townsend made it very clear that her focus is in advancing the mission of the organization through shared governance and a deep respect for scholarship. She also expressed her desire to work closely with administration and staff to achieve organizational goals.
“It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Lumbee Tribe because we are standing at a threshold that can open many, many doors,” asserted Tribal Administrator Lowry-Townsend. Dr. Lowry-Townsend’s background extends from Appalachian State University, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Pembroke, East Carolina University and Campbell University. She holds over 20 years of experience in administrative, management, and executive leadership serving as an academic and educational officer in elementary and secondary educational institutions.
