2nd Showcase of homes held

The Housing Program of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina hosted the Second Annual Showcase of Homes at Arrowpoint Subdivision in celebration of National Homeownership month.  The showcase and housing fair was held on Saturday, June 28, 2008.

Activities began at 10 a.m. with homes being open for visitation by the general public.  The tribe also hosted for the homeowners at the Arrowpoint Subdivision a meeting where they formed an association, elected officers and meet with the Town Manager for Pembroke, Mr. McDuffie Cummings, the Chief of Police for the town of Pembroke, Mr. Frank Hernandez and the Tribal Chairman, Mr. Jimmy Goins.

“I hope by having this event during National Homeownership Month, and letting the public see the quality homes being built by the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina,” said Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins, “that people will know and realize that we are not simply about repairing homes but about building and strengthening our communities.”

Activities were available to occupy youth while adults could tour the subdivision.  Activities included apple bobbing, horse shoes, hola hoops, dodge ball and a dunking booth.

Also on hand were several lending institutions, as well as Mr. Bieler with Section 184 of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“It is opportunities like this,” said Bosco Locklear, Housing Director, “when you see the positive impact you can have on a family, particularly a family with children, that make working in Indian housing so rewarding.”
