Tribal Clerk announces changes to Enrollment Ordinance

The Tribal Chairman has signed an ordinance passed by the Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina at the January business meeting.  The new Tribal Enrollment Ordinance will go into effect February 20, after being posted for 30 days.

“I happily signed this ordinance when it reached my desk, because it will impact the tribal members and services in a major way,” states Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett. “This new ordinance will allow the Administration to service more tribal members and will relieve a burden on our elders.”

The new ordinance has two important changes that will affect tribal members. Tribal members who now update their enrollment at the Enrollment and Records Office will now be eligible to apply immediately for tribal services without having to wait one year.

The other major change in the new revised ordinance will impact tribal elders.  Members 55 years and older, who hold active membership, meaning they have updated their tribal membership, do not have to update again.

“While active tribal elders who are 55 years of age or older no longer have to update their information every seven years,” states Chairman Swett, “we do encourage them to keep their membership current by reporting changes to address and other important information.”

The Enrollment and Records Office is now located at the new Tribal Housing Complex located on highway 711 west in Pembroke.  Further information may be obtained by contacting Alex Baker at 910-522-2202.
