Tribal Chairman speaks at 2nd Annual American Indian Heritage Month Ag Celebration


        (November 2010) The Tribal Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina spoke at the 2nd Annual American Indian Heritage Month Ag Celebration Tuesday, November 23rd at Larcus Lowry’s farm in Pembroke.

        “The spirituality and hospitality of us being together here today is one of our characteristics as Lumbee people,” said Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett (pictured -middle), “it shows and demonstrates our appreciation for the land, and our reliance on our Creator.” Following the Chairman’s remarks, Southern Sun sang an honor song to give thanks to the Creator for the bountiful harvest he provided the farmers with this year.

        Farmers and local citizens of Robeson County gathered at the Lowry farm to celebrate Indian Heritage month and to connect with the community as well as State and local farm bureaus gave where they were able to show their appreciation to the farmers for all of their committed hard work.

“It is great to be back home, thank you all for the great example that you all set in so many ways,” said Congressman Mike McIntyre (pictured above-far left). Also in attendance was Senator Michael P. Walters (pictured above-far right) who represents many of the farmersin our region on the state levle and who is a farmer himselfl.

        North Carolina Department of Agriculture representative Rick Iverson spoke on eradicating witch weed, one of the programs conducted within the department, and how the program is similar to the strong ties American Indians have to the land and the deep respect for the environment stating the programs mission falls in line with that belief.

        The event was followed by a lunch prepared by local farmers from their crops.
