1st Annual Indian Health Clinic Golf Tournament

(November 2010) The Health and Human Services Department of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina hosted its 1st Annual Indian Health Clinic Golf Tournament on Friday, November 5th at the Fairmont Golf Club.

“Understand that you are not just here swinging a golf club, you are here swinging an opportunity in another tribal member’s direction--the opportunity to have access to professional health care and I thank you for taking action to change someone’s life,” said Tribal Administrator Dr. Lowry-Townsend(pictured swing -below-right).

To start off the day’s event Representative Elect Charles Grahamd(pictured swing -below-left) made the first swing to set the three-man super ball tournament in motion. By the end of the day the team of Tommy Britt, Richard Miller and Doug Backer shot a 14-under-par 58 to take first place, winning $300 and the team of David Locklear, Lemark Harris and Gerald Strickland came in second with a 59 winning $150.

Each of the 18 holes was sponsored with all proceeds going toward the recently acquired Indian Health Clinic (IHC).  The IHC has been relocated to Native Angels in Pembroke and the Health and Human Service Department of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has assumed its operations. The Health and Human Services Department is leaning on the support of the community to ensure continued operation of the IHC, through benefit events such as the Arts Dinner and Auction, the 1st Annual Indian Health Clinic Golf Tournament, and monetary donations. With the support of the community the IHC will be able to continue service for roughly 11,000 tribal members who are either underinsured or uninsured. The Lumbee Tribe would like to thank Lewis & Lewis CPA’s, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Pineview Enterprises, Holiday Inn Express of Pembroke, Southern Interiors & Design, Lumber River Electric, True Value Hardware, ARM General Contracting, Robesonian Golf Fund, Lumbee Regional Development Association, Builders FirstSource, Eagle Feather Arts, Unimed/Home Health Care Service, The Maintenance Men, Lumbee Guaranty Bank, Shannon & John Blue, and Ocie F. Murray, Jr. for making the event possible by sponsoring one or more holes in the tournament. For more information on the IHC or how you can contribute please call, Alex Baker at 910-522-2202.
