The Lumbee Tribe participates in Annual American Indian Mothers, Inc. Conference
(October 2010) The Tribal Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the Honorable Purnell Swett, appeared as a guest speaker at the opening for the 9th Annual Indian Mothers, Inc. “Walking in Many Worlds” Spirit of One 2010 Conference on Thursday, October 14th at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Annex Center.
“I commend the American Indian Mothers for having the vision to bring together the caliber of individuals that are represented here today” said Chairman Purnell.
Shortly after the welcoming commentary, Young Society, a Lumbee Boys & Girls Club drum group from Pembroke, sang an honor song as a cultural enrichment presentation was given by Youth Services Coordinator John Oxendine on the different types of American Indian Dances. Women’s and Men’s Traditional dance was performed as Oxendine gave the meaning, history and significance of not only the dance but the regalia worn by each dancer. “These dances are pan-Indian, meaning a lot of the tribes out there are doing these dances,” described Oxendine.
The conference yielded many different speakers however, most were agriculturally based. A range of topics were covered from soil erosion and renewable energy to nutritional information. A number of representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) were on hand discussing the importance of farming, insuring a farm, the benefits from farming and how to get involved in agri-business. There were also mentors present speaking on the jobs available within the USDA branch of the Federal Government.
