Lumbee lands new grant for domestic violence

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is proud to announce that the US Department of Justice through the Office of Violence Against Women has funded a Lumbee initiative entitled Enlightening Native Daughters (END) in the amount of $937,289 over a three year period under the Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Assistance Program.

The purpose of END is to provide safety, support, awareness and preventive services to American Indian women and children suffering from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and/or stalking within the rural communities.  The competitive grant application was prepared and submitted by Beatrice Maynor, Grant Manager, Tara Blue, Project Coordinator of the Homicide and Motor Vehicle Death Prevention Program and Rebekah Revels Lowry, Project Intern.

“This new initiative will provide the Tribe an opportunity to develop and strengthen effective responses to violence against women,” said Tribal Chairwoman Sharon Hunt. “We look forward to the opportunity to work with criminal justice agencies, victim service providers, community organizations and churches to respond to the needs of victims.”

Partnering agencies include: Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, Lumbee Housing Department, Robeson County Offender Resource Center, Staffing Alliance and Southeastern Family Violence Center.
According to Tara Blue, Program Coordinator, “Honor is found in the project name as it reflects the shared journey to bring an END to hopelessness and violence against American Indian women and children through physical, mental and spiritual enlightenment, and thus restoring balance within families.”
The program anticipates providing programmatic services beginning January, 2012.
