Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina participated in a housing fair
The Homeownership Department of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina participated in a housing fair aimed at preventing foreclosures on Saturday, June 18, at Biggs Park Mall in Lumberton. This was the sixth annual fair and is sponsored by the Robeson County Community Development Corporation.
“Previous years have focused on homeownership.” said Kathy Locklear, Homeownership Manager for the Lumbee Tribe, “However, with the economy being weak and unemployment high, this year we thought we needed to focus more on how to help prevent people from losing their homes.”
The fair highlighted resources and ways available to area residents to prevent default on their mortgages and how to keep equity in their home. There were a number of vendors at the fair, besides the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The fair included entities such as the North Carolina Financing, Wells Fargo and the United States Department of Agriculture.
“Within the Homeownership Department, we have a Financial Education Program,” states Locklear, “and this program is designed to give our tribal members, who we help with homeownership, the skills, knowledge and understanding of how to not only keep their home, but to also maintain it so that it helps them build wealth.”
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina does offer foreclosure assistance to qualified tribal members. Under the program, tribal members must demonstrate that they are having trouble paying their mortgage due to reasons beyond their control, including job loss or reduction in income due to reduced hours, illness or another temporary hardship.
