Inaugural Ceremony to be held June 14
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is proud to invite tribal members and the general public to the Inaugural Ceremony of the Tribal Chair, the Honorable Sharon Hunt. The ceremony will be held at Southern Spirit Community Center, in the Back Swamp community, at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, June 14.
Tribal Chairwoman Hunt is also a member of the Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and represents Tribal District 2, which includes: Back Swamp, Fairmont and Smyrna. Chairwoman Hunt is also the Vice-Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, as duly elected by the Tribal Council in January 2011, and has served as a member of the Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina since 2006.
Chairwoman Hunt assumed the Office of Tribal Chair of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina on Monday, May 23 at 12:01 pm, due to the resignation of former Tribal Chairman, Purnell Swett. The Lumbee Constitution under Article VIII, Section 3, and Subsection b outlines the assumption of duty and authority of the Office of Tribal Chair due to vacancy. Vice-Chair Hunt was given the Oath of Office by the Chief Justice of the Lumbee Supreme Court, the Honorable Gary Locklear, shortly after noon on May 23.
The event is free and refreshments will be served after a ceremony publicly acknowledging the inauguration of the first woman and the fourth Tribal Chair of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina since the Tribe adopted the Lumbee Constitution in November 2001.
