Annual Kick Butts Day at Pembroke Park

(Marc h 2011) The Lumbee Tribe Tobacco Cessation Program hosted its annual Kick Butts Day at Pembroke Park on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
“We want to see everybody stop smoking because it is not healthy and we want you to help us spread the word--to stop smoking!” said Lumbee Tribal Administrator Dr. Rose Marie Lowery-Townsend as she energized the students.  Last year, Chairman Swett declared Wednesday, March 24, 2010 Kick Butts Day in the Land of the Lumbee.
The North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund is a program under the Golden LEAF Foundation. The North Carolina General Assembly created the foundation through the settlement between 46 states and cigarette manufacturers. As a result, a campaign called Tobacco Free Kids began in Washington to promote tobacco prevention, which in turn created Kick Butts Day.
Youth from each Lumbee Boys & Girls Club performed skits on the consequences of smoking. Topics included second hand smoking, snuff/chew tobacco, effects on unborn babies, and underage purchasing.
There were several interactive activities provided for the youth. “Our objective here today is to create awareness among our youth and through that initiate prevention,” said Tobacco Cessation Coordinator April Bryant.
