UNCP students donate to Tribal Volunteer Program
According to the students, because the organization they identify with is Native American based they had the desire to contribute to the Lumbee Tribe. Students involved in the service project were Arielle Harding, Terryn Ransom, Hanna Blue, Francine Cummings, Breanna Locklear, Eva Lowery, Jessica Smiling, Lydia Locklear and Heather N. Locklear. “These students have made a difference in their community today by positively impact the lives of others that are economically disadvantaged,” said Lumbee Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett, “I want to thank each one for their leadership in setting an example for others to follow.” The mission of the Volunteer Program is to enhance the lives of tribal members, through various programs offered at the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex. The program strives to help develop integrity, dependability and lasting relationships through community outreach. “It is awesome to see our youth take advantage of the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of their community, creating a sense of ownership and enhanced Tribal pride and participation,” commented Volunteer Coordinator Morgan Hunt Warriax. To be eligible for the program volunteers must be 18 year of age and older, submit an application containing verifiable personal references, complete an initial interview process, comply with a criminal background check, and satisfy mandatory volunteer orientation and training.
