Tribal Administration submits RFP for Riverside Golf Course

(March 2011) The administration of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina had a brainstorming session with local Lumbee golfers and businessmen on Monday, March 7th at the Lumbee Tribal Housing Complex building to discuss restoration of the Riverside Golf Course in Pembroke, NC.

“We are solely concentrated on the golf course not the culture center, it is not on the table for discussion,” stated Tribal Administrator Dr. Rose Marie Lowry-Townsend, “let there be no confusion the focus is only on Riverside Golf Course.”

Those in attendance discussed ideas on how to re-open and maintain the golf course. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will not be funding the Riverside Golf Course management project. Membership pledges are currently available through the tribal office for those interested in reserving their slot at the golf course for the upcoming playing season. The pledges will be used as funding to bring the golf course up to state standards and codes.

After an inspection was conducted on the golf course it was temporarily closed on February 4, 2011 after some of the facilities were determined hazardous. The North Carolina Department of Administration posted a Request for Proposals (RFP) on February 15th for vendors interested in leasing, maintaining and operating the 110 acre golf course. “We heard straight from the source how important this resource is to the community,” said Administration Secretary Moses Carey. “When 120 people take time out of their busy lives to attend a meeting and speak their minds, we owe it to them to do our best to move this project forward.” The lease includes a 3 to 5 year term with three, 5-year renewal options. The deadline for proposals was March 14th at 4 p.m.

Tribal Administration attended a second Listening and Learning Session in regard to the golf course on March 10th during the 2011 N.C. Indian Unity Conference. Tribal Administration submitted its proposal on Friday, March 11th. According to the North Carolina Department of Administration, it tentatively anticipates a one week turn-around time for notification of award for the management contract.
