BRAVE Club performed at UNCP half-time show (February 2011) The Pembroke Lumbee Boys & Girls Club members that are involved in the Body Mass and Resiliency Assessment through Vigorous Exercise (BRAVE) Club performed at the Women’s University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) versus Armstrong Atlantic State University women’s basketball game on Wednesday, February 23rd at UNCP’s Jones Athletic Center. For eight weeks the BRAVE Club members have been practicing wrestling, aerobics and yoga. Through these activities they have been learning about the importance of incorporating exercise into their daily routines. In early February all BRAVE Club members that were interested were provided the opportunity to wrestle during the intermission at a wrestling match using a 30-30-30 format. For three consecutive sessions, the youth would wrestle for 30 seconds and then take a break. Craig Shaffer, Director of Marketing and Promotions for General Athletics arranged for the girls of the BRAVE Club who did not express interest in wrestling to perform during the women’s basketball game. They were accompanied by the UNCP Dance Team and performed the Cha-Cha Slide. The youth practiced for three weeks to prepare for the big night and wore their BRAVE Club t-shirts while performing. BRAVE Club is geared toward increasing activity levels and changing habits or lifestyles that are centered on minimal activity and eating. Along with physical activity the children are learning resiliency skills and coping mechanisms. Nutritional sessions are also being integrated into the program. For more information on the BRAVE Club please call, Onnette Jacobs at 910-522-5192. |
