“Be Healthy, Be Fit” comes to Lumbee Boys and Girls Clubs

(January 2011) The Volunteer Program of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has been awarded a service-learning grant to be put implemented with the Lumbee Boys and Girls Clubs.
The UnitedHealth Heroes Grant is designed for Lumbee Boys and Girls Club members to research and become educated on the issue of childhood obesity. According to Volunteer Program Coordinator Morgan Warriax, the youth will learn the importance of making healthy choices, being active, and sharing this information in their communities.
“Obesity has become a major health problem for American Indians,” stated Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina Purnell Swett, “prevention programs that encourage healthful eating habits and physical activity needs to be developed and started in our communities.”  The service-learning project has been named “Be Healthy, Be Fit” and includes physical, educational and nutritional activities. According to the curriculum, the four-month program will be presented in four themes of About ME and My Health; Obesity and Nutrition; Making Smart Food Choices; and Sharing Knowledge With Others. They will incorporate Lumbee history and tradition as well as media influences in order to show the effects each has on nutrition and lifestyle.
The Volunteer Program will partner with various organizations throughout Robeson County to accomplish its objectives for the program.  “Our goal is to make an impact on these young children by educating them on nutrition and physical activity in a fun, culturally sensitive and creative way,” said Warriax, “with the hope that they will pass the information on to their parents, siblings and friends.”
The grant was awarded by Youth Service America by way of UnitedHealth care. For more information please contact, Morgan Warriax at 910-522-5463.
