2011 Tribal Council swearing-in ceremony

(January 2011) The 2011 Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina hosted its swearing-in ceremony for the new tribal district representatives Tuesday, January 18th at Tribal District 2 Southern Spirit Boys and Girls Club and Community Center in Lumberton.
The Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe Purnel Swett opened up the ceremony acknowledging the Tribal Council for their support in his first year of office followed by personally thanking each outgoing Tribal Council member. “Again, to the members of the 2010 Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, thank you for your service, your leadership, and your forbearance.”
The Executive Director of the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, Greg Richardson, presided over the ceremony as Master of Cermonies.  Richardson introduced members of the council to come forth for a special tribute to the late Ray Littleturtle, a former Tribal District 7 representative. A proclamation, read by 2010 Speaker Ricky Burnett, was dedicated to Littleturtle by the Chairman declaring January 15, 2011 as Mr. Ray Littleturtle Day in the land of the Lumbee. “No one really dies until you stop missing them, he will always be with us,” said Tribal District 2 Representative Sharon Hunt. Southern Sun, the Lumbee Tribal Host Drum, then sang an honor song.
Tribal representatives Laura Sampson from District 2, James Harold Locklear from District 7, Furnie Lambert from District 12, and Ricky Burnett from District 14 were recognized by their fellow council members for their hard work, sacrifices and dedication throughout their term.  Each had the opportunity to give their last remarks. An honor song was then dedicated to the outgoing members.
Richardson introduced the Tribal Council-Elect followed by the Honorable Gary Locklear giving the Oath of Office. Following their oath, the new Tribal Council members Louise Mitchell, Steve Sampson, Pearlean Revels, Larry Chavis, Danita Locklear, William Maiden and Larry Campbell were pinned by fellow members of the Tribal Council. Each of the newly sworn-in representatives made statements of their eagerness to get to work for their districts and bring about new objectives for year.
Bishop James Harold Woods concluded the ceremony with the benediction followed by appetizers from Fullers Old Fashion BBQ.
